BIO

Annie O’Connell is a contemporary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and wearable art.  She was educated at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, where she received a BA with Honors in 3D Fine Art, and Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston, MA.  O’Connell brings rigor and curiosity to her work, traversing disciplines and scales.

Large-scale abstractions stand at the center of her practice.  O’Connell layers surfaces, employing collage as a structural foundation to fragment, reassemble, and obscure.  Using consumer magazines and print media current to the time, she weaves fashion, political, and cultural events into the backgrounds of her compositions.  She portrays tension between order and chaos in her work, leveraging paint and color to breathe life into her work.

Her sculpture and wearable work extend these same concerns into three dimensions, leveraging material properties, fabric, wire, plaster, and paper to interrogate how form can define, open, and enclose space.  O’Connell is interested in how surfaces hold history, and how the act of making itself becomes embedded in the finished object across all her work.

O’Connell’s work is held in private collections and exhibited through her studio practice based in the United States.
